One way to get your feet wet in the whole foods plant based world is to do a Mary's Mini. Mary's Mini is a short-term McDougall program, named for Dr. John McDougall's wife, Mary McDougall, who designed it.
Mary's Mini is a 10-day program, but you could certainly extend it for a longer period.
First, select a starch that you love. I recommend that you use potatoes or sweet potatoes, for the maximum weight loss benefit. Prepare for your adventure by cooking up a large batch of potatoes, enough to get you through the first few days of the program. For instance, you could bake a few dozen potatoes or make several trays of baked fries.*
You are expected to eat as much as you want of your selected starch.
For sides, you can use fresh or frozen non-starchy vegetables (also no limit). You can use any condiments as long as they are free of oil and animal products.
Eat to your heart's content, and watch how this very simple diet can help jumpstart you on your weight loss journey.

*Use parchment paper on the cookie sheets to make the baked fries. For baking potatoes, Mary McDougall recommends that you place parchment paper around the potatoes before wrapping them in aluminum foil. In this way, the aluminum foil does not have to directly touch the potatoes. The reasoning for this is that there is a strong correlation between aluminum poisoning and dementia. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/21157018/
